Geek It! Animation Newsbyte: First look at Disney-Pixar’s Coco
In this teaser, we meet 12-year-old Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) who aspires to be a musician just like the legendary Mexican guitarist, Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt).
One day, Miguel breaks into Ernesto’s mausoleum and decides to touch Ernesto’s enchanted guitar. Little did Miguel know that this was the start of a great adventure as he soon finds himself whisked away into the Land of the Dead. He soon meets the charming trickster Hector (Gael Garcia Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.
Directed by Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3, Finding Nemo), Coco is ultimately a love-letter to Mexico. Not only does it pay tribute to its musical culture but it also draws references to Mexico’s traditional holiday, Día de los Muertos (also known as the Day of the Dead).
Set to be released in November, COCO is one of Disney-Pixar’s two films to be released in 2017 — the other being Cars 3. In addition to this, Coco will be Pixar’s first original project since 2015’s The Good Dinosaur.
