CGP: Welcome to Australia, Tomia! This is your first time at Madman Anime Festival. What are you looking forward to at this year’s event?
Tomia: Thank you very much for your welcome! This is actually my second time being away from home. This festival is so cool, and the quality of Australian cosplay is so much higher than I expected. Everyone here is so pretty and handsome. At first, I didn’t know what to expect of this event so I was, and still am, expecting the unexpected [laughs].
CGP: You are cosplaying Kotori from Love Live! School Idol today — it is a very cute costume! Why have you chosen to cosplay her?
Tomia: I chose to cosplay Kotori because the costume is lightweight, and it fits within my baggage limit [laughs]. I also chose to cosplay her because it suits my image quite well and I wanted to show everyone my cute side.
CGP: Have you seen any of the Love Live! cosplayers here at Madfest? What do you think of them?
Tomia: Yes, I have! I feel like they have done a great job taking on the characters’ persona. I love it how they’ve portrayed the characters’ bubbliness, and the quality of each cosplay costume is absolutely amazing.
CGP: You’ve cosplayed many popular characters such as Asuna from Sword Art Online and Kinomoto Sakura from Cardcaptor Sakura. How do you usually decide on your next cosplay costume?
Tomia: I don’t really plan costumes in advance — everything is usually done on the spur of the moment, and it depends on whatever appeals to me.
If a character triggers my interest when I watch an anime, I would cosplay him/her. Or, if it’s a character from a classic show or if it’s a character that I have always wanted to cosplay, this is when I cosplay him/her. I just go with my feelings and whoever I want to cosplay at that moment.
CGP: You have been cosplaying for over a decade now. In terms of the cosplay-making process, how has it changed over the years?
Tomia: When I first began cosplaying, I researched a lot of information on the Internet such as basic patterns, and costumes etc. Later on, I wanted make costumes more professionally so I decided to study fashion design. This is because I wanted to make costumes with more intricate designs and patterns at a higher quality. However, more recently, I have been buying my costumes from Taobao [laughs] rather than making the costumes myself.
CGP: Out of all your costumes, which costume is your most favourite, and why?
Tomia: My most favourite cosplay costume is Disney’s Elsa. This is because I love the story, and I love her beautiful costume. It took me so long to make the costume, plus I’ve put a lot of effort into the photoshoot and editing as well.
CGP: How long did it take you to make the Elsa costume?
CGP: From your point of view, what makes the art of cosplay special?
Tomia: I find the process of converting a 2D character to a real-life character rather interesting, especially when people interpret and portray the characters differently in their own ways. And of course, the cosplay-making process for each character is very different.
CGP: I think you have done this with every costume that you have made and/or cosplayed.
Tomia: Aw, thank you so much!
CGP: And finally, do you have any tips for aspiring cosplayers?
CGP: Thank you so much Tomia for taking the time to chat with us today!
Tomia: Thank you! =)
