For those who have been living under a rock, Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto manga series concluded its 15-year run last year in November. However, that sure didn’t stop Kishimoto from creating a sequel to one of Japan’s most successful shonen series to date.
As much as we want an action-packed sequel featuring Hokage Naruto as the main character once more, this sequel is headlined by none other than Naruto’s son … BORUTO.
According to this very first teaser trailer of Boruto, the spin-off series is apparently regarded as the “pinnacle” of Kishimoto’s career.
Directed by Hiroyuki Yamashita, this teaser gives us a first look at Naruto’s so-called prodigy son, Boruto (Yuko Sanpei), who strongly declares he will change their generation. Boasting similar arrogance and cheekiness, it may put off viewers as Boruto appears to be a young Naruto who wants to be acknowledged by those around him. We simply can’t judge him though — there might be more to Boruto’s character than we think.
No new information is given about Boruto but the trailer does mention Sasuke being Boruto’s ‘master’ and Boruto’s rival is none other than Uchiha Sarada (Kokoro Kikuchi) aka Sasuke and Sakura’s daughter. With the movie script written by Ukyō Kodachi (and supervised by Kishimoto himself), it will be interesting to see how they form a solid movie story, especially when Boruto have only released a few manga chapters in Japan.
Set to premiere in Japan on August 7, Boruto is a reminder that Naruto has finished, yet it hasn’t finished. If you’re still having mixed thoughts about Boruto altogether — don’t worry, our beloved Junko Takeuchi and Noriaki Sugiyama will return in this film as Naruto and Sasuke.
