Geek It! Animation Flashback: George Shrinks
Imagine being exceptionally small. Imagine being able to go wherever you want and do whatever you want. Imagine riding ants through your backyard and flying in your cool automobile. Sounds familiar? We are talking about none other than … GEORGE SHRINKS! Here’s a #Throwback to one of our favourite childhood cartoons!
Based on the children’s book series by William Joyce, George Shrinks is a Canadian-Chinese animated series that aired back in 2000. The show revolves around ten-year-old boy named George and his adventures with his family and friends. But George isn’t your average ten-year-old — he is actually three inches tall!
Life as a three-inches-boy is an adventure itself. For a tiny boy, George is super smart and confident. In his own time, George likes to invent devices to assist with his daily activities in order to adapt to his surroundings.
We’re talking about using paper clips as coat hangers to glide his way across his bedroom; spatula catapult instruments to hurl pancakes; suction cups to scale tall items and more.
One of the coolest things about being George Shrinks is owning the infamous Zooper car — a multi-purpose vehicle which can automatically transform into an airplane, a helicopter and even a submarine! Besides having cool gadgets, George often has interesting encounters with insects and animals who are somehow able to communicate with him.
With a Dad who is a jazz musician and a Mum who is an avant garde artist, life is never boring at the Shrinks’ house. And of course, we can’t forget about George’s brother, Junior (aka George’s sidekick). Not only is he the cutest sibling in animation history, but he is also caring and helpful too, as he helps George out with tasks that are difficult for him.
But it’s not just the characters that made the show fun and memorable. Besides the retro 1950s influence, we love how the show is flourished with bright colours and simple animation. Accompanied by blues and jazz music, George Shrinks is the type of engaging animation that brings plenty of creativity, grooviness, and positivity into our lives.
