Geek It! Anime Newsbyte: Chihayafuru Kami no Ku live-action trailers hit the web

Here at CtrlGeekPod, we are HUGE fans of the CHIHAYAFURU series. So when a live-action adaptation of Chihayafuru was announced earlier in the year, we were over the moon.

But would it be as good as the critically acclaimed anime series? Can they portray real-life karuta in a beautifully dramatic manner as seen in the anime? How would the characters look?  To end your misery, here are two recent trailers for the movie:

For those who don’t know Setsugu Yuki’s Chihayafuru manga series, it revolves around a schoolgirl named Chihaya who competes in competitive karuta. As Chihaya takes on the dream of becoming Japan’s best female karuta player, she is soon separated from her childhood karuta friends, Arata Wataya and Taichi Mashima. Now in high school, Chihaya still continues to play karuta in the hopes that she will one day meet her friends again.

Directed by Norihiro Koizumi (Midnight Sun, Kanojo wa Uso o Ai Shisugiteru), Chihayafuru live-action will be a two-part film. The first film, Chihayafuru: Kami no Ku, will be released in March 2016, and the second film, Chihayafuru: Shimo no Ku will be released in April 2016.

As far as we know, the live-action adaptation will be a reconstructed story, focusing on the best parts of the manga. This includes recreating the scene where the club members pray at the shrine just before the tournament. Filming against the backdrop of Shiga Prefecture’s Ōmi Shrine, the film actually shot many of its scenes during the real-life All Japan High School Karuta Tournament – the same championship seen in the manga.

Our first impressions? From the chosen cast members to the cinematography direction, Chihayafuru live-action film is looking very promising and true to its original content. At this stage, our main concern is the film’s storytelling and how they execute it. However, since the Chihayafuru series is very much focused on the concept of karuta, they should have no problems adapting the story.

From left to right, here is the first promotional image of the main cast (including directer Norihiro Koizumi at the end):

  • Yūki Morinaga (Kanojo wa Uso o Ai Shisugiteru) as Tsutomu Komano
  • Yūma Yamato (Silver Spoon, Crows Explode) as Yūsei Nishida
  • Shūhei Nomura (Taifū no Noruda, Hibi Rock: Puke Afro and the Pop Star) as Taichi Mashima
  • Suzu Hirose (Umimachi Diary, The Boy and The Beast) as Chihaya Ayase
