Cosplay is no easy hobby — you need to perfect everything about your character from the poses to the facial expressions to the detail in costumes. Most people cosplay for fun, and to share their passion for Japanese pop-culture with like-minded fans.
But then there are other cosplayers who take their artistry to the ultimate level. When it comes to anime conventions, this person is one of Japan’s modern pop-culture icons who has taken the world by storm. She — yes, she — not only looks exactly like the characters, but she sings and performs as well.
She is … REIKA.
REIKA (麗華) is one of Japan’s top-ranking cosplayers and is well-renowned for her elaborate hand-made costumes and accurate portrayal of male characters.
Reika’s most popular cosplays include Jinguji Ren (Uta no Prince-sama), Levi (Shingeki no Kyojin), and Hijikata Toshiro (Gintama). In addition to this, she has even cosplayed the entire ‘Generation of Miracles’ from Kuroko no Basket by herself.
Cosplaying at a high-quality level, it has earned Reika a high reputation in the Japanese pop-culture world, ultimately making her a celebrity-cosplayer with fans across the globe. With major appearances at various conventions across the world including US, Singapore and China, Reika will be heading to Australia for SMASH! (Sydney Manga and Anime Show) in August.
Reika’s involvement at SMASH! 2014 marks the first attendance of an international celebrity-cosplayer at any Australian anime convention. For further information about SMASH!, click here: www.smash.org.au
